Surface Preparation

Substrate must be sanded using #120, 150 or 180 grit paper and be free of dust and all contaminants prior to staining or coating. Sealer must be sanded with a #280/320 paper before application of the topcoat and recovered within 8 hours after sanding. Eliminate all contact with metallic surfaces. Selflac must not be applied over metal, old oil finish or nitrocellulose lacquers. Stain systems used under Selflac should be acid stable.

General Information

Agitate material before use. Always mix Selflac to ensure products consistency and consistent gloss. Apply at 3 - 5 mils wet on sanded or sealed substrate. Selflac could be applied in 2 or 3 coats depending on desired finish. A thorough sanding of each coat with 280/320 grit stated paper is essential for proper adhesion. The subsequent coats must be applied the same day as the previous coat is sanded. Maximum film build of the system should not exceed 3 mils dry. Contact with metal sources should be avoided. Selflac must not be polluted with oil, varnish or the like and must not be sanded with steel wool between coats.

To obtain complete cure, Selflac should be applied at a temperature above 18°C and relative humidity below 65%. When drying, this product is not to be exposed to ammonia vapours. Finished surfaces must not be cleaned with ammonia containing products. Always use plastic or stainless equipment to eliminate discoloration due to oxidation.

Selflac is used as a self-seal or with following sealers: 390-001, 390-0060, 431-1219, 546-8003 and 546-5192.

THE CUSTOMER IS RESPONSIBLE FOR FOLLOWING THE RECOMMENDED APPLICATION PROCEDURES. FAILURE TO ADHERE TO THE RECOMMENDATIONS GIVEN IN THIS DATA SHEET WILL LIKELY RESULT IN UNSATISFACTORY FILM APPEARANCE OR FILM FAILURE. THE COMPLETE COATING SYSTEM SHOULD BE CHECKED FOR REQUIRED PROPERTIES PRIOR TO THE START-UP OF PRODUCTION.

Dry times are greatly affected by film build, porosity of substrate, air movement as well as heat and humidity. Temperatures are based on actual board temperature. This may vary depending on length of time for boards to reach these temperatures. Minimum curing temperatures of 64°F/18°C must be maintained throughout the curing cycle to achieve the film integrity as stated in product features.
