Product Description

Chemvinyl 550 is a single component vinyl modified nitrocellulose sealer that provides excellent sealing properties and very rapid dry.  Chemvinyl 550 was developed to improve adhesion and moisture resistance. Chemvinyl 550 is an easy sanding sealer designed for the professional applicator who requires a rapid dry, easy sanding material. The Chemvinyl 550 shows improved adhesion with various stain systems.

All nitrocellulose lacquers will yellow over time. This could become an issue if this product is used over white surfaces. This yellowing generally adds a warm patina when applied over most other colors and stains.

Recommended:  Architectural Woodwork Institute Nitrocellulose Lacquer System (8th Ed).

Uses

Chemvinyl 550 is recommended for household furniture, millwork, decorative items as well as many other interior wood applications.

Surface Preparation

Substrate must be sanded using 120, 150 or 180 grit stearated paper prior to staining or coating. Chemvinyl 550 cannot be used on metal or old oil finishes. AkzoNobel recommends using 825-00XX or 825-09XX series stains or 824-50XX series waterborne stains.

General Information

Apply at 3 – 5 wet mils on sanded substrate. Maximum film build of Chemvinyl is not to exceed 2 mil dry. Allow 45 minutes to one hour to dry at a minimum of 68°F (20°C) prior to topcoating.

Sand with 280/320 grit paper before topcoating and ensure topcoat is applied the same day the sanding is done.

Chemvinyl must be thoroughly agitated at all times to ensure product consistency.

Chemvinyl is used for sealing wooden furniture and other wood surfaces for interior use only. It can be used on all wood types and after drying and sanding, may be overcoated with acid curing systems such as Danspeed 424-44XX, 424-45XX and Plastofix Light 421-48XX. Chemvinyl may also be overcoated with pre-catalyzed materials such as Opticlear 431-80XX, EVar 421-80XX, Varicure® 431-46XX, ES Lacquer Elite II 431-47XX, Chemguard 431-70XX or ECat 431-11XX.

Dry times are greatly affected by film build, porosity of substrate, air movement as well as heat and humidity. Temperatures are based on actual board temperature. This may vary depending on length of time for boards to reach these temperatures. Minimum curing temperatures of 64°F/18°C must be maintained throughout the curing cycle to achieve the film integrity as stated in product features.
